NA Just For Today Daily Meditations

MeditationOne of the problems addicts face in recovery is a kind of “toxic mind.” They find that thinking about not using leads them to focus on drugs and this brings up cravings to use. For some addicts, this can seem like an inescapable trap because it springs from their own mind. Narcotics Anonymous, the AA equivalent for drug abuse, uses a method of daily meditations to help overcome this as well as inspire “right thinking.”

The NA, “just for today” highlights the battleground addicts often face. While there are good intentions in the broad sense, the struggle sometimes comes down to just getting through one more day. Impulses to use are specific and have an immediacy that is like an itch. So the purpose of a daily meditation is to fight the battle where it is most powerful – just today or sometimes even, “just for the next five minutes.”

Traditional NA just for today daily meditations start with the words, “Just for today.” Some examples are:

  • Just for today I will have a program and follow it to the best of my ability.
  • Just for today I will listen and think before I respond.
  • Just for today I will have faith in someone in NA who believes in me and wants to help me in my recovery.

One of the great things about the internet is that you can have daily meditations emailed to you. One sign up is at the narcotics anonymous site. There are also discussion groups were addicts can share an especially powerful meditation – either how the current one helped them or perhaps a favorite from the past.

The just for today daily meditations can also help jumpstart a meeting. They can come from the NA handbook itself or members can bring them in. By reading a meditation and having a moment of silence to think about it, each member can then talk about what it means in their life.
