Fish Oil In Future Alcoholism Treatment Programs?

Good news for people who take one of those monster fish oil pills. I started taking them a couple of months ago after reading several articles about what kind of vitamins a man of my age with couple of specific health complaints should be taking. The soundest advice I gathered in my research led me to my current regimen of one multi-vitamin, a B complex, a vitamin D, and one of those huge fish oil pills. The fish oil was recommended for its benefits to the heart, joints, and skin.

Now there is news that the benefits of fish oil may include fighting depression and cravings for alcohol in alcoholics. A study published in the journal Translational Psychiatry recently announced that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil may mute cravings for alcohol, as well as improve mood. Using laboratory rodents, researchers from the Indiana University School of Medicine found that long-term exposure to omega-3s reduced alcohol abuse among mice bred to be bipolar.

The study’s authors noted that these specially raised rodents will drink relatively large quantities of alcohol if given the chance, and that the presence of high levels of omega-3s in their blood appears to mute their cravings for the substance.
